Reimagination of the World: A Critique of the New Age, Science, and Popular Culture .
Published in Paperback by Bear & Co (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Clarity At Last: "Reimagining" the New AgeDavid Spangler and William Irwin Thompson "reimagine" the New-Age in this clear, sometimes shocking discussion. Based around the forums of two major New-Age conventions in 1988 and 1989, their visons and interpretations of countless aspects of what is commonly referred to as the "New Age" are the kind of candid, honest appeal to humanity that is so rare in this oftentimes overly-metaphysical genre. While the numinous aspects of reality are not spared (they fully discuss astral projection, channelling, and the like of modern "crystal worshippers"), what is refreshing is the humor and human-ness which accompany their insight. Being a reader who was raised with the concepts of past-life regression and karma as a moral and spiritual guidepost, I have often struggled with the paradoxical nature of the new-age movement. Seeming inacessible, lofty, and pretentious, this emotionally indulgent attempt at enlightmennt sent me searching Christianity for answers. Needless to say, I arrived at the discovery that both crystals and Christ can be limiting. Thus, my finding Spangler's and Thompson's exegesis on their comprehensive experience as both founders and dissentors of the new-age movement was fortunate; their ideas will engender a synthesis of thought both full of enlightenment and common sense - a combination rare in the often-megalomaniacal realm of spirituality and religion.

Richie : The Ultimate Tragedy Between One Decent Man and the Son He Loved
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (May, 1973)
Average review score:

A thought provoking bookI read this book years ago and just reread it. The issues are always important. The author does a great job presenting a non bias view of the tragedy of a father killing a son because he can't cope with the son's drug use. The problem is here years later I want to know how the survivors have moved on with their lives and generally what has happened to them.

Ricster-Ricster

MysteryDonnie Joe Thompson made a real image of what could happen in any ordinary small town, and it was exciting throughout the whole book. It kept me on my toes, and I didn't want to put the book down for a minute. Many mysteries are in this book, but there is only one way to find out. I am not going to give it away that easy. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves murder mysteries, or for anyone wanting to expierience what can, and does happen in a small town.

Robespierre and the French Revolution
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (April, 1962)
Average review score:

The Life of the TyrantRobespierre embodied the grandest ideas of the French Revolution as well as its most contemptible acts. Though remembered as a ruthless tyrant, he was once acclaimed as the nation's selfless champion of liberty.
Thompson was a leading authority on the history of the French Revolution. He wrote the standard biography of Robespierre as well as The French Revolution. He was a Fellow of the British Academy and Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Thompson died in 1956.
Using a mixture of chronology and biography, Thompson sheds light on the life of the Revolution's most controversial and unique character. Led by "common hopes and fears," Robespierre was dragged into the bloodshed of the Reign of Terror.
Robespierre had to be persuaded to sign for the death of Louis XVI, signing only in hopes that the death of the king would be the last death of the Revolution. Soon, however, the Girondins had to go and others followed them. Opponents of liberty and the republic as well as conspirators against the common cause were sentenced to death. Robespierre attempted to create a new social order with the Supreme Being at the head and reason as its chief basis. Robespierre's punishment of those who conspired against him, not the Revolution, seemed to be the final straw for the people. Robespierre was arrested, and after shooting himself in the jaw, was sent to the guillotine, forever to be remembered as the "dictator" of the Reign of Terror.
The work presents a well-defined topic that is well supported. This is a scholarly study intended to enlighten readers about the man behind the myth.
Thompson studied Robespierre in depth and shows bias toward him. The work does not put Robespierre on the highest plain, but shows a tendency to defend his actions and present him as a martyr. It seems that the author is attempting to change commonly held views about Robespierre in hopes that he will be remembered as a visionary champion of liberty and not as the man who sent so many to the guillotine.

Romans and Blacks (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture, Vol 2)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (June, 1989)
Average review score:

An Important And Provocative WorkA very impressive book. In his "Romans And Blacks," Thompson elegantly and thoughtfully explains the "racial" worldview of the ancient Romans. According to Thompson, the Romans had a completely different, and far healthier, understanding of physical differences (ie. race) than we do today and, consequently, were not racist, at least not in the modern sense. In addition, Thompson critiques much of the earlier research and analysis of the Romans' racial views. The common error made by earlier classicists, according to Thompson, was to impute modern racial views to the Romans, thereby unintentionally distorting the source material. Thompson's research is exhaustive and his argumentation is lucid. Most impressive, though, is the originality and sheer intelligence of his thoughts. "Romans and Blacks" provides great insight into the Roman view of race, and, by doing so, provides a context for understanding the modern view of race. I highly recommend "Romans and Blacks." (It is even better than Snowden's works.)
